Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger rejected Stanley Tookie Williams’ plea for clemency Monday, setting the stage for a midnight execution. But Williams’ attorneys said they would not give up fighting for their client’s life, citing the discovery of three new jailhouse witnesses who, they said, came forward this past week with evidence that Williams was framed. Attorney John Harris said he would petition the governor again this afternoon to commute Williams’ death sentence. Schwarzenegger announced his decision on clemency mid-day in a six-page statement after mulling the decision for weeks and meeting with prosecutors and Williams’ lawyers on Thursday.
