“Deep down, we all wanted to be Clive Davis,” Simon Cowell intros in the latest trailer for the upcoming Apple Music documentary, Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives. “He’s the greatest record man of all-time,” Aretha Frankin declares.
Dropping October 3rd with a limited theatrical release in select cities starting on September 27th, the doc chronicles the historic influence of “The Man with the Golden Ears,” who rose from humble beginnings, and in a compelling and riveting journey, became one of the music industry’s most iconic figures.
“Clive was the first guy that took us seriously,” states Babyface as Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs adds, “He knew he was hearing a new sound.”
L.A. Reed added later, “That range of Kenny G to The Notorious B.I.G, that’s distance,” While Alicia Keys spoke about Clive’s finger point while listening to music.
Clive is responsible for a plethora of artists careers including his favorites like Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston, who he said, “got it,” referring to her undeniable talent. She is one of the principal artists said to have helped define his career.
“Her version of the Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl is such an old-time classic,” says Clive. “Nobody comes even close.”
Houston’s rise and downfall are also a focal point in the documentary.
Directed by Chris Perkel and based on Davis’ 2013 bestselling autobiography, the film is an inspiring story of courage, resilience, talent, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Davis has signed, influenced and driven the careers of many of the most important music artists of the 20th and 21st Centuries, including: Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, Bruce Springsteen, Earth Wind & Fire, Billy Joel, Barry Manilow, Patti Smith, The Kinks, The Grateful Dead, Aerosmith, Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Santana, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Rod Stewart, Sean “Puffy” Combs, and, of course, Whitney.
