I don’t know about this one folks, but you be the judge!
Canadian superstar The Weeknd delivers his unique rendition of R. Kelly’s classic 1995 ballad, “Down Low.”
On the record, which premiered on OVOSOUND radio on Saturday night (Sept. 9), the Grammy-winning singer keeps the original lyrics and adds a little flare to the production as he unearths his inner R&B/Soul.
“Keep it on the down low / Nobody has to know,” Abel sings in his signature falsetto. He doesn’t cause any harm to the record, but the feeling and emotion that’s necessary for an R&B ballad may have been a little slight.
The Weeknd may not make any babies with this cover, but we can’t knock his hustle for giving it a run.
He may catch some flack from non-R. Kelly fans, especially since the Pied Piper have been engulfed in a public scandal where he’s being accused of holding several different women hostage in an alleged sex cult.
that’s here or there though!
This new R. Kelly rendition will add to The Weeknd’s growing cover catalog which includes a run at Michael Jackson’s “Dirty Diana” on his 2011 effort, Echoes of Silence, and a reworking of Beyonce’s, “Drunk In Love” in 2014.
In the meantime, the Weekend is ready to embark on the second leg of his “Starboy: Legend of the Fall Tour” with special guests Gucci Mane and NAV. The 33-city North American trek will kick off in Boston on Tuesday (Sept. 12).
