R&B/soul singer India. Arie says the break between “Testimony Vol.1” and “Testimony Vol.2” was due to unhealthy elements surrounding her career and artistry. “I really needed to take care of myself,” says Arie. “Everything was out of order. I was emotionally unwell and also tired of the challenge of fitting into someone else’s paradigm of a black artist”. After taking a much deserved break, the “Therapy” singer says the forthcoming “Testimony Vol. 2, Love & Politics” “represents me vocally, lyrically and sonically”. Arie’s freedom also has to do with the decision to start her own imprint entitled Soulbird, which is distributed through Republic. Under Soulbird, Arie is able to focus more on her artistry and less on the politics of the business. At the same time however, Arie does admits “that pressure is there,” referring to albums sales. “I’m all about feeling, and this album is 99 percent uncompromised in that way.” India Arie’s highly anticipated album “Testimony Vol.2, Love & Politics” hits stores and digital retailers Feb. 10 via Soulbird/Republic.
