After the well-received reviews of the first-ever “Soul Cypher” last year (featuring Lalah Hathaway, Eddie Levert, Chrisette Michele, and K-Ci), The Soul Train Awards continued with this new tradition last night (Nov. 27) at this year’s ceremony.
This time around, Angie Stone, Tyrese, Ne-Yo, and Gladys Knight offered their soulful vocals to an instrumental of Bryson Tiller’s “Don’t” with additional keyboard accompaniment by the talented Robert Glasper.
Ne-Yo kicked things off by meshing then lyrics to his song “Ms. Independent” with the track, then Angie Stone took the spotlight to add hit “Brotha” into the mix. Tyrese took an impromptu approach, combining the titles of his songs together into a soulful freestyle. The “Empress of Soul” Gladys Knight meshed her 1970s Pips-accompanied hit “Neither One Of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)” into the mix, and as always, she sounded great!
