Foxy Brown isn’t the only femcee upset about her exclusion from this year’s VH1 Hip Hop Honors. Angie Stone is also not too pleased with her absence from the ceremony, as well.
This year, VH1 recognized pioneering women in hip-hop, including Queen Latifah, Salt-n-Pepa, Lil Kim, and Missy Elliott.
Stone was a member of the female rap trio The Sequence during hip-hop’s inception. They were signed Sugar Hill Records in the late 70s, early 80s, their biggest hit being “Funk You Up” which was later sampled by Dr. Dre for his 1995 single “Keep Their Heads Ringin.”
It’s understandable why Stone is upset that her contribution to women in hip hop wasn’t recognized. Angie said in a statement, “Although they made no fuss of previous shows, trusting and believing that their time would come; this time the trio Angie B., Blondy Chisolm, and Cheryl ‘The Pearl’ Cook feels undermined and disrespected and want their voice to be heard. ‘They’re honoring ‘female’ Hip Hop legends, said Stone. ‘We definitely should have been included in the celebration this year for sure!’”
What do you think, Roomies? The Sequence didn’t get as large as Salt-n-Pepa, but is that a valid reason for VH1 to overlook them completely?
