Today was the day that protesters were supposed to gather at the NFL HQ in NYC to boycott Beyonce for her display of black identity during the Super Bowl 50 Halftime show last weekend, which paid homage to the Black Panthers’ 50th anniversary. But it turns out the event was a bust; it’s reported only about three protesters showed up.
Early this morning, Tuesday, a tweet from a group called “Proud of the Blues” account called on protesters to attend. “Be safe and keep it classy – because THAT’S HOW WE DO! #USA#AllLivesMatter #BlueLivesMatter #BoycottBeyonce #NFL,” they tweeted along with the following statement:
The event was supposed to start at 1 pm Eastern, but instead, only the #IStandByBeyonce crowd showed and stood in “formation”!
A group called Black Girl Rising was present to counter the anti-Beyonce protests. They held signs that read things like “Me loving me doesn’t mean me hating you,” and “why are people afraid of black pride?” The anti-Bey protest ultimately turned into a pro-Beyoncé/Black Lives Matter event.
Seems like organizers weren’t serious about the protests, proof that the issue of Beyonce paying homage to the Panthers isn’t as serious as the issue Beyonce was trying to bring awareness to, a.k.a, what the Black Panthers stood for in the first place.
