The Hip-Hop genre ain’t the only one who can have a cypher! Host of the 2015 Soul Train Awards, Erykah Badu, decided it was time to create a cypher for the soul headz!
Like the cyphers on the BET Hip-Hop Awards, where unlikely emcees come together to freestyle, Badu enlisted her own crew of soul heavy-hitters: Chrisette Michele, Lalah Hathaway, K-Ci (of Jodeci), and legend Eddie Levert of the O’Jays all sang over a sample of Mobb Deep’s 1995 classic “Shook Ones Pt. II,” and the results were magical!
With boatloads of soul, scatting, and ad libs popping off all over the place, the crew ended it with an “adlib battle” where K-Ci and Eddie took it there while Badu cooly DJ’d in the background.
