Slowly, but surely, Adrian Marcel has been making his presence felt in today's R&B scene. Although new to some ears, the Republic Records artist has worked with quite a few popular names including Snoop Dog, Kelly Rowland, E-40, Casey Veggies, and Kirko Bangz. In addition, the 24-year-old singer-songwriter, from Oakland, California, has been sighted telling his story and serenading the ladies everywhere in the past year from BET Music Matters to 106 & Park to SOBs in NYC, where we just so happened to catch up with him.
In April of 2013, Adrian released his first EP, 7 Days of Weak, presented by none other than his mentor, the Grammy award winning Raphael Saadiq. Less than a year later, if people weren’t sold based on the raw, yet feel good vibe of 7 Days of Weak, he upped and released his hit single “2 AM,” featuring Sage The Gemini, making it very clear that he's ready to contend in this industry. Soon after that he dropped his latest project, The Weak After Next EP, fully equipped with love songs, chill songs, and collabs most musicians would kill for! While established fans and people just getting hip enjoy The Weak After Next, Adrian is gearing up to release his debut album "Got me F**ked Up" in 2015, and if you haven't witnessed his growth or heard his story already, I think the title alone can assure you that it won't be long before you do.
After a smooth, show stopping set at Hot 97's Who's Next showcase at SOBs in NYC, Adrian sat down with Singersroom to give a quick rundown of his experiences thus far, what we can expect on "Got Me F**ked Up", and even threw in a few fun facts for any melting hearts out there!
Check out what he had to say below:
How was it touring with Keyshia Cole?
Adrian: Oh my gosh, it was amazing! She's a great person, and wonderful, and the fact that she's from East Oakland like I am, it's a blessing to be surrounded with that, and she was very welcoming, so I learned a lot.
What was your most memorable moment on the “Point of No Return” Tour?
My most memorable moment with Keyshia was the moment she spoke to me and I handed her these roses and I looked in her eyes and I was just telling her like thank you so much for allowing me to be this close to you. And she laughed and walked away. (Laughs)
What's your favorite tour city?
Ohhhh (Leans back) see this is kind of a tricky question, Cause we in NY, because I'm in NY… NY today (laughs); definitely.
A lot of people want to know, who is the mysterious singer on your rendition of 'Girls Love Beyoncé’?
That is the wonderful, talented, and beautiful Jane Hancock. That's my best friend, my sister for life, you will never hear an Adrian Marcel project that she doesn't have her hands on.
Your debut album is expected to drop early 2015. Why the title "Got Me F**cked Up"?
Because, I mean, I'm F'd up. Over love, I'm F'd up over situations that I'm going through in life, you know what I mean, and I feel like it's the perfect title for my story. I've had some girls f**ked up and (laughs) they've had me f**ked up, and I feel like everybody in the world can relate to that. At some point in time, somebody had you f**ked up.
What can we expect or look forward to on this album?
You can expect more honesty. It's really where I'm at in life, and a deeper story to it, more in depth I'd like to say. I've given 7 Days of Weak, which is kind of like an introduction, reading the back of the book to kind of get a quick summary, and then Weak After Next was kind of like my current situation. But being the artist that I am, I like to think about the future and what I'm going through and where I could be at and I feel like I always end up landing on the target, and with that, I just want to be able to have my audience watch me continue to grow.
