August Alsina is a new artist, but he’s already breaking records: he’s the first R&B singer ever to make it onto XXL’s Freshmen Class list for 2014, which also features rappers Chance The Rapper, Isaiah Rashad, Rich Homie Quan, Troy Ave, and Ty Dolla $ign.
His presence as 1 of 12 Freshman members rubbed some hip-hop heads the wrong way. However, we (and XXL) would argue even though August doesn’t rap (the music), he embodies hip-hop (the culture) in every way.
Per tradition, Alsina took part in the freshman freestyle. However, he used a different type of flow to that of the orthodox, freshmen class member; as a singer, he crooned his thoughts off the top of his head.
