For Neo-Soulstress Algebra, the formula for greatness includes the universal languages of math and music, both of which the southern songbird possesses on her debut album Purpose. A protégé of the great Kedar Massenberg (Erykah Badu, India.Aire), Algebra pours her heart out on her debut album PURPOSE featuring the Kwameâ produced single âRun & Hide.â On âRun & Hide,â Algebra tells the story that many of us are familiar with, a testament of trying to find true love without settling for less and becoming frustrated enough to run away. A former background singer for Monica and Bilal, Algebra felt as if singing for other artists was about as out of character for her as having someone write songs for her. “Even when someone else wrote a song specifically for me, I felt like I was still being a background singer for myselfâ. However, on âPurpose,â Algebra is on her own, her definitive voice issues both relatable and truthful messages. A product of the Atlanta music scene, Algebraâs utilization of open mic nights and other shows she used to hone her craft come through on Purpose. The soulstress says “Soon you learn not to care what others think, you learn to perform for you. I would come back week after week and I learned to perform for balance and for freedom. I was becoming alive.â On the song âAt This Time” she utilizes this balance and freedom, placing herself on display to someone whom she has waited a long time to unite with citing descriptive and colorful lyrics, âMy arms brag to each other bout how you feel/From conversations I know what they feel is realâ. In addition to Kwameâs âRun & Hide,â the neo-soulstress collaborated with award-winning songwriter and producer Brian Michael Cox (âCircle,â âBe Without Youâ) on âWhat Happened,â a soulful ballad delivered so honestly and with such vulnerability that it sounds like it could be her autobiography. When asked about the title for her project âPurposeâ Algebra states âThe defining moment of purpose is when you realize all that you have is worth less than nothing and still, life is worth living.â âPurposeâ is in stores now!
