2013 is set to be a big year for Destiny's Child singer Michelle Williams, but before she made it to this point, she had to overcome a struggle within her personal life. During a recent rehearsal for her upcoming role in the Tony Award-winning musical Fela! as Sandra Isadore, the Gospel hit-maker opened up about her battle with depression.
"I've dealt with depression," the 32-year-old states. "I had to choose to get out of bed and do whatever I needed to do to be happy."
Williams helped kick the disorder with regular exercise, therapy, positive thinking, and religion.
"We're taught, 'Just go to church and pray about it. The Lord is going to heal you.' Well, in the meantime, I believe God-gifted people, physicians, doctors, therapists — that's your healing. Take advantage of it," she adds. "Go see a professional so that they can assess you. It's OK if you're going through something. Depression is not OK, but it is OK to go get help."
Williams and her sisters, Beyonce and Kelly Rowland, revealed a new single, "Nuclear," for an upcoming Destiny's Child album last week. The project, dubbed Love Songs, a collection of previously released songs, plus the new record, co-written by Williams will arrive January 29th.
In addition to the Destiny's Child project, Williams will hit the stage for her first performance in FELA! in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 29 at the Shakespeare Theatre Company. She is also expected to unleash her third gospel album this year under a new record deal with Light Records.
