Our society has moved away from listening and respecting our elders. Even in the music industry you see younger artists disrespecting or just not honoring the legacy of artists that have paved the way for them. It seems Floetry member Natalie “The Floecist” Stewart understands the importance of listening to people that have been around during the sunny days and those days filled with purple rain.
Talking to Singersroom exclusively, The Floacist had a chance to reflect on something music icon Prince said to Floetry before the duo disbanded in 2007.
“About seven years ago Prince had wrote a song for Floetry. It was an exceptional privilege working with Prince,” The Floacist tells us. “He invited us to his house and he predicted all the challenges that would come as a group. However, he said that Floetry could never end because Floetry is not just a name. Floetry is more than a name it’s a genre and it’s a style. He said as long as that is remembered Floetry will always live.”
Within two years after Prince laid out some of the trials and tribulations the group would face, they battled some of those same problems he gave them foresight on, and they were not able to over come them, which led to Marsha Ambrosius leaving the group.
“Prince is such an icon. I didn’t take those words lightly. Funny enough a lot of those things did come to play,” adds The Floacist.
While the contributions that Floetry has made to music will always be sealed in the history books, The Floacist plans to do her best to keep the brand ringing in the ears of old and new fans. Her forthcoming second solo studio album, The Floacist presents: Floetry Rebirth, is a celebration of the group’s 10th year anniversary. The project includes a revamped version of “Say Yes,” originally recorded by Foetry for their debut album, Floetic.

“This is the reason after 10 years after the release of Floetic, which came out October 1st, 2002 (my nephews birthday), it is still relevant and it is still time for a rebirth,” she says.
Since Marsha left the group, communicating between the two can only be heard in media reports, but for Natalie, Floetry is bigger than them both and she will always leave the door open for her hit making collaborator.
She adds: “Like I said, she is irreplaceable and the door will never be closed to her (Marsha). I don’t want the legacy of Floetry to be tarnished by other vibrations. That’s always been what I’ve been trying to protect.”
We never know what goes on behind closed doors, but what we do know is the fans still yearn for that unique Floetic sound. It’s a great feeling knowing that Floetry can never die.
