UK music listeners sent Whitney Houston straight to the top 10 on the UK Albums Chart Sunday. According to the Official Charts Company, fans picked up over 73,000 albums days after Houston’s death.
“The tragic death of Whitney Houston came as a shock to her friends, colleagues and music fans across the world. Again, the British public is demonstrating its love of Whitney, just as it did for Amy Winehouse last year and Michael Jackson in 2009,” Martin Talbot, managing director of the Official Charts Company said Sunday.
The bulk of sales came from Houston’s “Greatest Hits” package, which catapulted to no.7 on the albums chart. “The Essential Whitney Houston” also moved well, entering the Top 40.
Houston’s hit, “I Will Always Love You,” moved on the Singles chart as well, reaching no.14. “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” re-entered the same chart at no.20.
Overall, 127,000 singles were sold over the last week.
Whitney Houston was buried in New Jersey Sunday, following a start studded Homegoing service Saturday. Her music will live on.
