Levert, the hit-making R&B trio that featured the vocal and songwriting skills of the late Gerald Levert, is reportedly being revived. Just one year after the Gerald Levert died of an accidental combination of over-the-counter and prescription drugs, his younger brother Sean and writing partner Marc Gordon have plans to perform again as Levert, which was known for hits like “Casanova,” “Pop, Pop, Pop (Goes My Mind),” and “Just Coolin’.” The two former Levert members have drafted singer Dwight Thompson as their third member. Thompson was formerly in The Rude Boys, which boasted a Number One R&B hit in 1990 with the Gerald Levert-written and produced tune “Written All Over Your Face.” Thompson sang in a later version of the group. The re-formed Levert will perform a tribute to Gerald on November 23rd as part of Cleveland State University’s annual Thanksgiving Holiday Jam. The three have already performed some warm-up gigs. “The audiences have been great,” Sean told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. “People like the Levert sound … I think we can keep it going and try to get some new material out soon.” Gerald, Sean, and Marc had been planning a new Levert CD at the time of his death and never got a chance to complete it. Gerald’s posthumous album, In My Songs, was released in February. The singer died on November 10th, 2006.
