Excuse me! Women dressing as men, in the comfort style men possess, has been very popular throughout history. The trend has made several comebacks throughout the years, especially on the runway, however; certain celebs have been rockin’ the style since the 80’s, with a fresh twist of course. Fall 2007 runways, including Stella McCartney, Valentino, Betsey Johnson, Balenciaga, boasted “manly” looks with loose fitting trousers, oxford blouses and oversized ruffle tops. Fashion magazine dedicated two page layouts to the reoccurring trend and argued how a female can pull of the male look oh so well. Well, for us females, it is a blessing to be able to spice up our looks and make a pair of over sized trousers and oxfords shirts look FABULOUS without looking, excuse my language, “butch.” Men, on the other hand, do not have that option. Would you want your boyfriend wearing a baby-doll dress? I think not! But, you can wear his oversize tee and baggy jeans and make it look ultra fem.
Credit must be given to the some of the leading ladies in the industry for starting this trend. McLyte, Queen Latifah, TLC, Aaliyah, Ciara, and Cassie to name a few. These sexy females had the guts and confidence to modernize the male, baggy look and make it their own. I can’t help but gush when TLC’s “Red Light Special” video comes on and Chilly, T-Boz, and Left Eye (RIP) sway in their tube bras and oversize baggy jeans with boxers peaking out; definitely hot! This look is a trend that is here to stay.
This trend is a can do by any female, from the most athletic to the girly-girl, but be sure to modernize the look and make it your own, like Ciara does. A pair of baggy jeans with pumps or wedges and a tight white-tee. If you want to take the more dressed-up route, pair a skirt with an oversize sweater and sneakers. Put your best foot forward this Fall season and give into this trend and work it, girl! —— By: Anna Dabrowska
