Former Destinyâs Child star Michelle Williams has been tapped for the role of Shug Avery for the Chicago production of âThe Color Purple.â The singer, who has also enjoyed a successful gospel career, will debut April 17th in the first national tour of Oprah Winfreyâs Broadway hit at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre. “This is just a dream come true,” said Williams, whose hometown of Rockford is about 80 miles west of Chicago. “I could not pass up the opportunity to do The Color Purple. To have the privilege of even auditioning was an honor for me.” Producer Scott Sanders said Williams will make a perfect Shug Avery because the character is the lone person in the musical who has “seen the world.” Williamsâ theater resume includes playing the title role in Broadwayâs “Aida.â âAmerican Idolâ veteran LaToya London is also in the Chicago cast as Celieâs sister Nettie. As previously reported (American Idol’s Fantasia Barrino to Join The Color Purple), Fantasia Barrino will take over the role of Celie on Broadway April 10. The Color Purple will be staged at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre from April 17 through July 22.
