Every year music mavens gather with their peers to honor the year’s best in the industry. This year was no different as millions tuned in to the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards. The night clearly belonged to country sensation Lady Antebellum who beat R&B favorites like Cee-Lo, Rihanna, B.o.B, and Bruno Mars for the coveted Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Another industry shock was when jazz singer Esperanza Spalding beat fan favorites Justin Bieber and Drake for Best New Artist.
Nevertheless, R&B reigned supreme at this year’s awards by having seven categories of nominees. ‘Grenade’ sensation Bruno Mars beat out the late Michael Jackson for the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Caribbean beauty Rihanna walked away with the award for Best Dance Recording, Fantasia and Usher won Best Female/Male R&B Vocal Performance respectively, and Best R&B Song went to John Legend and The Roots for ‘Shine.’
Rapper Eminem stole the show with two awards for Best Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Album and gave a riveting performance complete with cameos from Rihanna, Dr. Dre, and Skylar Grey.
Speaking of performances, all musical genres came together to pay tribute to the iconic Aretha Franklin. The performance was given by Jennifer Hudson, Christina Aguilera, Yolanda Adams, Florence Welch, and Martina McBride. Drake and Rihanna performed a fiery rendition of their chart-topping song, and the classic Janelle Monae coupled with B.o.B and Bruno Mars to perform.
