Willow’s dad Will Smith is rumored to be in talks with Sony for the potential remake of the musical “Annie,” with Willow as the star, reports Variety.
Will, who developed “The Karate Kid” starring his son Jaden, would produce the film through his Overbrook imprint.
While details about the “Annie” retooling are still in development stages, But words is Jay-Z might be involved to work on the music. The project reps were vague about whether the film would be a contemporary version and whether it will include any original songs.
“Annie” is based on a daily comic strip that debuted in 1924, “Little Orphan Annie”, which told the story of a little girl who, after escaping from an orphanage, is taken in by a rich Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks. The strip was adapted into a Broadway show in 1977 before brought on screen twice, a 1982 John Huston version and a 1999 made-for-tv Disney movie.
“Annie” will not be the first big screen appearance for Willow Smith. She previously landed roles in “I Am Legend” and “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl” which earned her a Young Artist Award.
Sony’s summer hit “Karate Kid” made more than $350 million worldwide and likely helped pave the way for exploring new ground with the “Annie” redo.
