2010 has been extremely kind to the ‘breakout artist.’ Many of them are landing superstar collaborations on their tracks, signing to major record labels, and performing amongst their peers at the most coveted award shows. The future looks bright as they ride the wave of fame right into 2011. While he may seem like a newbie to the scene, singer-songwriter Bruno Mars has been writing and producing hits for artists like Brandy, Cee-Lo, and Flo Rida for quite some time. Mars’ breakout moment came when he stepped from behind the scenes to lend his talents to the hook of the B.o.B hit single “Nothing on You.” Since then, he has received seven Grammy nods, all while releasing chart-topping songs like “Just the Way You Are” and “Grenade.” This has also been a fairy tale year for Roc Nation’s newest recruits Willow Smith and Alexis Jordan. Smith, refusing to rest upon her parents’ dynasty is building her own empire as “Whip My Hair” peaked at no. 11 on Billboard Hot 100. She is also slated to begin a European tour with Justin Beiber early next year. Not to be outdone, Jordan is receiving rave reviews for her first single as well. The track “Happiness” is Jordan’s way of “bringing something positive to the world.” The former America’s Got Talent sensation is taking audiences overseas by storm and America is next! With strong Latin and R&B influences, the melodic vocals of singer Miguel have landed him a spot as one of the undisputed breakout artists of the year. The release of his album ‘All I Want is You’ and hit single by the same name have both been receiving outstanding reviews. Miguel’s star quality is evident and he is currently touring with Usher’s celebrated OMG Tour. It may seem like Mike Posner came out of nowhere but he has been on the scene as an indie artist since his early Duke University days. His breakout opportunity came when his street album ‘A Matter of Time’ peaked at the top spot on iTunesU. Posner was so in demand that an extensive bidding war amongst record labels ensued until he found his home at J Records. With a newly released album that is climbing the charts, it’s clear that Posner’s moment has arrived. When speaking of the hottest new artists of 2010, no list would be complete without the self proclaimed ‘Harajuku Barbie’ herself – Ms. Nicki Minaj. Recently signed to Lil Wayne’s dynamic Young Money record label, this hitmaker has collaborated with nearly every major recording artist in the industry – not to mention the unparalleled success of her debut album ‘Pink Friday’. From a fan perspective, this has truly been the Year of the Barbie. These artists’ recent rise to superstardom leaves fans hopeful about their success in the upcoming year. But judging from their credentials, hitmakers like these are sure not to disappoint!

2010 was a year of musical discovery. We saw breakout artists like Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj, and Miguel take the music industry by storm with their unique sounds and captivating lyrics. It seemed that no matter what genre you tuned into, these artists were dominating the charts and radio airwaves across the world. So let’s look back on this amazing year for music as we review some of 2010’s biggest breakout stars!

First up is none other than Bruno Mars. His debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans spawned hit after hit and skyrocketed him to stardom in no time at all. Songs like ‘Just The Way You Are’ and ‘Grenade’ had us singing along while his soulful voice melted our hearts. He even won a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 2011!

Next up is rap superstar Nicki Minaj who burst onto the scene with her eccentric style and outrageous personality, quickly making her one of the most recognizable figures in hip-hop today. Her debut album Pink Friday was an instant success thanks to singles like ‘Super Bass’ which gained massive commercial success and earned her several awards nominations. She has since cemented her place as one of modern day’s top female rappers, inspiring many young women around the world to pursue their dreams fearlessly.

Overview Of 2010 Music Scene

The past year was an exciting one for music, with a number of breakout artists emerging from all genres. 2010 featured some of the most creative and boundary-pushing acts in recent history, ranging from hip hop to R&B to pop. Below is a look at some of the top artists who made their mark on the industry this year.

First up is Bruno Mars, whose debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans hit #3 on the Billboard 200 chart. His singles “Just The Way You Are” and “Grenade” were two of the biggest hits of 2010, receiving huge airplay and propelling him into superstardom status. Nicki Minaj also burst onto the scene, becoming known as one of rap’s fiercest female emcees thanks to her mixtapes before finally releasing her much anticipated first studio record Pink Friday late in the year. Her single “Super Bass” gained massive popularity throughout summer months and earned her numerous award nominations.

Miguel also had quite a successful run in 2010, being nominated for several Grammy Awards for his debut All I Want Is You; he even won Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for his single “Sure Thing”. Other noteworthy acts included Florence + The Machine (Lungs), Janelle Monae (The Archandroid) and Adele (21). These talented newcomers proved that they have what it takes to make it big in today’s music industry by creating innovative sounds that pushed boundaries while still staying true to their respective styles. Nicki Minaj also had an incredible run this year, releasing her first studio record Pink Friday late in November. Her single ‘Super Bass’ quickly became a favorite among rap fans everywhere and earned her numerous award nominations.
