R&B/soul icon Teddy Pendergrass has died at the age of 59. The “Turn Off The Lights” and “Love TKO” singer, who is counted as a influence amongst today’s R&B heavyweights including Usher, died Wednesday, January 13. His son, Teddy Pendergrass II, told the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper that his father died on Wednesday at a Philadelphia-area hospital where he had undergone colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had a difficult recovery. Pendergrass rose to fame with Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes in the 1970s, which had hits including “If You Don’t Know Me by Now,’ before embarking on a solo career. Noted for his smooth baritone and sensual delivery, Pendergrass has continuously been recognized for hits including “Close the Door,” “Turn off the Lights” and “Love TKO.” Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Pendergrass family, he will be missed.
