Compelled after reading the script for ‘Winnie,’ Jennifer Hudson says she’s honored to have been selected for the role. “Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman and Iâm honored to be the actress asked to portray her,” Hudson said in statement this week. As previously reported, Hudson will appear as Winnie Mandela, ex wife of noted South African leader Nelson Mandela. Starring alongside award-winning actor Morgan Freeman (Mandela), Hudson will take on the complex role of an embattled and controversial woman. “She has been depicted as the mother and wife who was a steadfast supporter of her activist husband and who was jailed herself for campaigning for his release and fighting against apartheid,” reports Variety. “Her image was subsequently tarnished by association with a bodyguard who murdered a 14-year old alleged informer, and she was later convicted of fraud.” Confident in the forthcoming picture, Hudson says “This is a powerful part of history that should be told.” Intent on capturing the good, bad and the ugly, sources say the film will begin production May 2010 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
