Christina Aguilera is in a state of transition.

In her new spread for Paper Magazine, the multi-platinum GRAMMY-award winning singer and songwriter strips down to show off her softer side. Known for some of her cheekier looks during the height of her career, now 37-year-old, Christina has made a few changes to her image since she first emerged onto the scene.

Embracing the beauty of art and express, the singer breaks down her thoughts on life imitating art. “I’ve always been someone that obviously loves to experiment, loves theatrics, loves to create a storyline and play a character in a video or through stage,” she explained “I’m a performer, that’s who I am by nature. But I’m at the place, even musically, where it’s a liberating feeling to be able to strip it all back and appreciate who you are and your raw beauty.”

Christina also spoke on her controversial career in comparison to some of today’s artists. “[New artists] don’t have as much backlash when they come out on the scene. And I did. It was a controversial time for me.”

She also named a few of her hip-hop favorites; placing Childish Gambino, Chance the Rapper and Cardi B at the top of her list.

In a time where the #MeToo and Times Up movements are shining a light on the discrimination and sexual abuse women of all industries and backgrounds have experienced, Christina has never been shy to share her story of domestic violence and the turbulent relationship she’s shared with her father.

“I watched my mom have to be submissive, watch her Ps and Qs or she’s gonna get beat up… You can either be, unfortunately, so damaged by it that you take a turn for the worse, or you can feel empowered by it and make choices to never go down that route.”

Christina Aguleria is currently working on her hugely anticipated studio album which doesn’t have an official release date or title. She did drop a hint to begging fans that “It’s coming bitches,” with a handwritten note on her Walk of Fame star via Insta-story.
