Jhené Aiko declares her “Ascension” to heaven in the standout song, which features Brandy, and lifted from her newly released album, ‘Trip.’ On the ethereal track, driven by mellow keyboard chord structure, the West Coast R&B artist gives us an introspective look into her life as she continues to mourn the loss of her brother.
“Then you showed up and I got up / Yeah, sort of / Found my way again,” she sings.
Brandy, who added her signature sound and spice to the record, thanked Jhene on social media for the feature.
“Thank you @JheneAiko for sharing your light. What a great talent you are,” she writes. “#Ascension #Trip (Jhené Aiko’s masterpiece) is everywhere now!!”
Aiko, who is a huge fan of Brandy’s told Billboard, “She has the perfect voice.”
As previously reported, Aiko surprised fans with the 22-song album, Trip, on Friday (Sept. 22) after releasing a short film of the same name. Both the album and short film was inspired by the lost of her brother Miyagi, who passed in 2012.
“My brother and I were very close. We were only two years apart,” she said. “I never thought of him as a separate person, but an extension of myself. He was my reflection. In his presence, I was confident and always so sure.”
