Month over month, we here at Singersroom come across tons of new music, and we want to spotlight some of these gems by sharing our faves on a monthly basis.
2017 year kicked off with some great tunes; from Maya Killtron’s authentic 80’s dance feel on “Bad Decisions” to Case’s return with his soulful love ballad “Heaven.”
For our January 2017 list, we clawed through well over fifty new songs to reach our ten favorites. Of course, this is no slight against any artists that didn’t make this month’s roster; let’s just say it was a competitive pool.
Hit “Next” and check out our list of our favorite jams from January 2017, which includes music from indie and veteran artists:
EarlGréy – Venus
Singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist EarlGréy enters 2017 with a bang, in the form of his brand new See Francis-assisted single, “Venus.” The track features Earl’s soulful vocal prowess, along with his attention to detail with the intricate production. Joining forces with New Jersey-native See Francis, to add a guest verse to the track, the pair showcase exactly why they are two of the most promising new artists the music world has to offer.
Keyshia Cole – You Ft. French Montana & Remy Ma
Keyshia Cole returns with the new single “You,” featuring Bronx rappers French Montana and Remy. The emotional, mid-tempo, female empowerment record sees Cole going back to her roots and singing about a broken relationship. “You” will appear on Cole’s upcoming Epic Records debut, 1111 Reset, the follow-up to 2014’s Point of No Return.
Maya Killtron – Bad Decisions
Get your dancing shoes on, because Maya Killtron unleashes some authentic disco vibes on her new single “Bad Decisions.” The song is lush with instrumentation, and Killtron’s voice is unapologetically strong and bright, in the same vein as her sel-proclaimed musical heroes Teena Marie, Prince, and The Gap Band.
Lalah Hathaway – Angel (Remix) Ft. BJ The Chicago Kid
Music to our ears! Lalah Hathaway and BJ The Chicago Kid come together for “Angel,” a cover of Anita Baker’s classic hit, which Hathaway placed on her 2015 album, Lalah Hathaway Live! Taking us to a place of nostalgia, the Grammy nominees deliver a breathtaking and ebullient rendition that will surely pull on the heartstrings.
Basheba – Platinum & Gold
The engaging and moving visuals for “Platinum & Gold” is the perfect foil for Basheba’s haunting vocal delivery and sparse production courtesy of XVR BLK. With one listen, you’ll be entranced by the soothing production and Basheba’s hypnotic melody.
Case – Heaven
Case is the hitmaker behind some of the 90s’ best tunes, such as “Touch Me, Tease Me,” “Happily Ever After” and “Missing You.” His new single “Heaven,” is a smooth love ballad where he brings the feeling of 90s R&B back into the mix. On the song, Case sings a heartfelt message about finding love and compares it to being in heaven.
Demetria McKinney – Easy
Demetria McKinney returns with the female anthem, ‘Easy,’ a record informing couples that relationships can be that easy if they keep it 100. “‘Easy’ is about a woman who wants the best for herself in her relationship,” says McKinney. “As women, we just want our men to do right by us. It’s easy.” The record is the first single from Demetria’s forthcoming album, Officially Yours, set to drop this Spring. The project was previously scheduled to come in 2015.
Tristan Price – Don’t Get It Twisted
Indie R&B artist Tristan Price gave us the smooth and sensual single, ‘Don’t Get It Twisted,’ which pays homage to “the love and devotion put into his relationship to make it work.” His vocals are passionate, sweet, and nostalgic. ‘Don’t Get It Twisted’ will appear on his forthcoming untitled album.
Kehlani – Undercover
“Undercover” is lifted from Kehlani’s debut album, SweetSexySavage. On the smooth, melodic, and nostalgic record, the West Coast songstress lets her Bae knows that she can “slide in undercover.”
Sevyn Streeter – Fallen ft. Ty Dolla $ign & Cam Wallace
Sevyn Streeter teams with Ty Dolla $ign and Cam Wallace for the song “Fallen,” a record from her forthcoming debut LP Girl Disrupted, due later this year. In the video, Sevyn unleashes boatloads of sensuality as she lies on a bed of rose petals and Ty duets with her for a raunchy back and forth. Rapper Cam adds an erotic verse.
BONUS: Mac Ayres – Easy x Blue Skies
Indie R&B/Soul artist Mac Ayres caught our attention with the smooth and heartfelt record, “Easy.” The 20-year-old singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist has only been penning his own music for a few years (three to be exact), but from the sound of it, he is well on his way.
