British R&B trio Rough Copy share their new ‘Viral Refix’ EP, a project of “refixes” and covers that turn records by Drake, Adele, Rihanna and Justin Bieber on their heads.
The project features seven tracks of creative flips. For instance, they turn up on their version of Adele’s “Hello,” which is flipped into a Trap&B song. Bieber’s “Sorry” is re-imagined over the track of Bryson Tiller’s “Don’t” for a soulful refix, and they turn Drake’s “Hotline Bling” into a stripped-down piano ballad. They even dig into the classics to bring out Aaliyah’s “4 Page Letter” and sing it over Young Thug’s “Best Friend” track. The set is capped off by a Mista Silva-assisted remix of an Afropop classic from Drake collaborator Wizkid and Ghanaian pop stars R2Bees.
About the project, Rough Copy said, “this is a no holds barred, no boundaries project, that allowed us to bring two genres of music together, that typically wouldn’t be merged otherwise, to create a musical hybrid that is uniquely ‘Rough Copy’.”
The London trio finished fourth on The X Factor UK in 2013 and were previously signed to Epic Records/Sony Music, but are now going independent, with a new EP coming this summer.
