RECAP: R&B Shines at BET’s Black Girls Rock! 2012 (Video)

As the annual concert festivities took place in New York for the Black Girls Rock! Foundation’s recognition of contributions by women of color, R&B was in full force with hot performances by Alicia Keys, Brandy, Keyshia Cole, India Arie, SWV, Ciara, and Missy Elliott.

Keys opened with “New Day,” the perfect song to empower the youth. Brandy and Keyshia Cole belted their new singles “Wildest Dreams” and “Trust and Believe.” Ciara’s musical montage featured her new song “One Woman Army,” “Sorry” and an old favorite “1,2 Step” by bringing out Missy Elliott. SWV tore the house down with a medley of their gems such as “Weak,” “Right Here,” and “I’m So Into You. India.Arie sang “6th Avenue,” showing her talents with a flute solo, and closed the show with her affirming hit “I Am Not My Hair.”

For the first time in Black Girls Rock! history, men took the stage to applaud the women. Luke James, Eric Benet and Anthony Hamilton performed a soul-stirring rendition of New Birth’s “Wild Flower.”

Alicia Keys, Dionne Warwick, and Janelle Monae were among a few of the show’s honorees.
