On Her Break: “I would say I’ve been singing and songwriting and recording for over a decade and I always wanted to be a mom so for one I just wanted to take a minute to create some space and time to have a family; move more at a life pace, record when I felt like I had something to say. When I felt motivated and [I] do shows here and there to support the people; give something to the fans that have been supporting me. [I waited] till I was ready to put out ‘Break of Dawn’ and now that I have, I feel really excited and energized and ready to tour and share it with the world.”

Biography
She’s a multi-talented artist, songstress and producer who has been making music for almost two decades. Goapele is her name, and she’s an R&B/Soul powerhouse with songs that range from sexy to socially conscious. Born in Oakland, California, Goapele began singing at the tender age of four. After graduating high school, she attended Berklee College of Music where she studied voice performance. During this time, she also worked on developing her own unique sound; a combination of soulful melodies, melodic raps, and insightful lyrics.
Goapele released her debut album Closer To My Dreams in 2001 which included hits like “Closer” and “Shoulda Known Better”. The success of this project put her firmly on the map as one of modern day R&B singer-songwriters with something important to say musically. Since then, she’s released other critically acclaimed albums such as Break Of Dawn (2005) Change it All (2009), Dreamseeker (2014), and most recently Forbidden Fruit in 2018.
Through these various projects Goapele has explored themes such as love lost & found, social justice issues affecting marginalized communities, and personal empowerment—all while maintaining a sultry edge that can only be described as pure sexiness! Her ability to craft thoughtful messages without sacrificing smoothness makes her stand out amongst other artists within the genre today.
Musical Journey
Goapele’s musical journey has been one of constant evolution. From the early days of her career to now, she has consistently pushed herself to create music that is both soulful and meaningful. Her willingness to explore different sounds while staying true to her R&B roots gives her sound a unique edge that sets it apart from other artists in the genre.
One example of this exploration can be heard on Goapele’s 2005 album Break Of Dawn, which featured collaborations with rappers like Talib Kweli and Common as well as singer-songwriters such as Eric Benét. Through these collaborations, Goapele was able to showcase her versatility by merging hip hop influences with smooth R&B grooves. The project also earned her two Grammy nominations for Best Contemporary R&B Album and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for the single “First Love”.
In 2018, Goapele returned after taking a break from recording new material since 2014’s Dreamseeker with Forbidden Fruit—an album steeped in themes of self-love, liberation, and empowerment. With songs ranging from sultry bedroom jams to thought-provoking anthems about injustice and inequality, it serves as a reminder of why we fell in love with Goapele in the first place: her ability to make us feel something deeply through her music.
Conclusion
I have always been impressed by the musical journey of Goapele. Her sound has evolved over the years, and her music continues to explore issues such as relationships, self-love, and identity. She is an artist who does not shy away from being vulnerable with her audience, sharing intimate stories about her personal life that many can relate to.
Goapele’s newest album Break of Dawn displays this vulnerability in a way that fans old and new will appreciate. Through soulful lyrics and soft melodies, she expresses complex emotions while still providing listeners with a great listening experience. It is clear that even after taking some time off for a hiatus, Goapele’s talent shines through.
Overall, I am happy to see how far Goapele has come since her debut album Closer. From exploring sexiness on “Hey Boy” to discussing heartache on “Say Something,” she demonstrates why she remains one of R&B’s most beloved artists today. As a fan, I am looking forward to seeing what else Goapele will bring us musically in the future!
