Blacklisted: Who Should’ve Been Nominated for a BET Award

The BET Music Awards air in less than a week, and we couldn’t help but notice that some of our favorite artists got looked over. Here’s a look at the list of nominees, and who should’ve made the list.

Best Female R&B Artist
Mary J. Blige
Melanie Fiona
Alicia Keys

Who’s missing: Monica. Her new album, Still Standing, was the best R&B album I heard all year, and shouldn’t the fact that she had a reality show on BET about her reentering the music industry have guaranteed her a spot in this category?

Best Male R&B Artist
Chris Brown
Raheem DeVaughn
Trey Songz

Who’s missing: The-Dream. The-Dream has changed the R&B game in a major way especially over the past year so why was he shunned? Honestly they could’ve traded Chris Brown’s nomination and given The-Dream his spot.

Best Gospel
The Anointed Pace Sisters
Kirk Franklin Presents Artists United For Haiti
Tamela Mann
Marvin Sapp
Vickie Winans

Who’s missing: Mary Mary. This award-winning gospel duo was nominated twice at the Grammys earlier this year, but no BET nomination? That doesn’t make any sense to us.

Best Female Hip Hop Artist
Ester Dean
Lil Kim
Nicki Minaj

Who’s Missing: Tiye Phoenix. She may not be as well-known as Lil Kim or Nicki Minaj, but this Baltimore-bred female rapper has been around for a minute and has worked with notable artists like Talib Kweli and Mos Def. If you don’t know her, ask about her.

Best Male Hip Hop Artist

Who’s missing: Gucci Mane. Despite his stint in jail, Gucci Mane still managed to drop a hit album last year, make 17 guest appearances on other artists’ songs, and was voted #6 on MTV’s annual “Hottest MCs in the Game” list. Apparently BET begs to differ.

Best Group
Black Eyed Peas
Diddy-Dirty Money
New Boyz
Young Money

Who’s missing: Electrik Red (See Interview). We’re fans of this new all-girl R&B group but maybe they’re a bit too new in the game to be nominated for best group. Maybe next year, ladies.

Best New Artist
Justin Bieber
Melanie Fiona
Nicki Minaj
Young Money

Who’s missing: B.o.B., also known as Bobby Ray. His first single, “Nothin’ on You,” skyrocketed on the charts, and his debut album reached #1 in its first week making him the 13th solo male artist to do so! He was nominated for Best Male Hip Hop Artist, but his newfound success should’ve granted him a spot in this category.

Best Collaboration
Beyoncé f/ Lady Gaga – Video Phone
B.o.B. f/ Bruno Mars – Nothin’ On You
Drake & Trey Songz – Successful
Drake f/ Lil Wayne, Kanye West & Eminem – Forever
Jay-Z & Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind
Trey Songz f/ Fabolous – Say Aah

Who’s missing: Roscoe Flash f/ Soulja Boy – All the Way Turnt Up. Radios and iPods kept this song in heavy rotation for months, and it was an instant club banger but it didn’t bang hard enough to be nominated in this BET category.

Video of the Year
Beyoncé f/ Lady Gaga – Video Phone
B.o.B. f/ Bruno Mars – Nothin’ On You
Melanie Fiona – It Kills Me
Jay-Z & Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind
Jay-Z, Rihanna & Kanye West – Run This Town

Who’s missing: Erykah Badu- Window Seat. This controversial video had people talking for days, weeks, even to this day, but I guess the streets weren’t talking enough since it wasn’t chosen for a video of the year nom. —— By: Crystal Tate
