Cheaper to Keep Her?

Legendary blues and R&B singer Johnnie Taylor might have been on to something when he sang his classic hit, “Cheaper to Keep Her.” Although he primarily referred to being forced to pay alimony in his lyrics, many of today’s celebrities are being socked with another punch to the wallet: child support. Just recently, reported that rapper Nas filed papers asking the judge to reconsider his child and spousal support payments to ex-wife, Kelis. Last month, he was ordered by a Los Angeles superior court judge to pay more than $350,000 in back support and at least $10,000 per month in spousal support to Kelis. Nas is now crying broke and claims he makes “substainally less” than $152,000 a month as originally reported. Nas isn’t the first celebrity to be ordered to pay outrageous amount for child support-and he certainly won’t be the last. Here’s a look at what some other stars are forking up each month, willingly or not.

Diddy-Diddy’s latest deal to exclusively sell Sean John at Macy’s might bring in even more money for the hip hop mogul, but does that mean more problems? He reportedly pays $30,000 a month to former girlfriend, Misa Hylton-Brim, and rumors have speculated that he pays close to $100,000 a month to his on-and-off main chick, Kim Porter. No word on what Sarah Chapman, the mother of Diddy’s youngest child, gets.

Shaquille O’Neal-Considering Shaq makes $21 million a year, he probably doesn’t even flinch at paying child support. “Basketball Ex-Wife” Shaunie reportedly got over $20,000 in temporary child support and alimony. Now that the divorce is final, I can only imagine she gets much more. After all, they do have four kids together.

Russell Simmons-Another mogul, another hefty child support payment. Kimora Lee Simmons, Russell’s ex-wife and mother of his two daughters, receives $40,000 a month.

50 Cent- He famously rapped “Have a baby by me, baby, be a millionaire” and although his son’s mother might not quite be a millionaire, she’s far from broke. She originally tried to obtain an extreme $50,000 per month child support order, but she ended up with $6,700 a month.

Swizz Beatz- Mashonda filed for divorce from Swizz in February 2009, and although he originally was giving her $5,000 a week for their two kids, reports have stated that he now only gives her $3,500 a month. Mashonda apparently isn’t satisfied and has asked for more before the court. Are we surprised?

Flavor Flav- Maybe Flavor of Love didn’t help Flavor Flav’s pockets too much. He reportedly owes over $60,000 in back child support to just one of his four baby mommas.

Bobby Brown- Bobby may be headed to the wedding altar again soon, but it looks like he’s going to the high bench even sooner. On June 24, he’ll appear in court to see if he can get his child support payments to Kim Ward reduced due to no source of income. He had been paying her $5,500 a month for his two kids. Rumors have speculated that Whitney Houston was making his child-support payments when they were married. I wonder if Bobby’s new fiancée knows what she’s gotten herself into?

Lil Wayne-Lil Wayne recently told Ozone Magazine, “I’m not on child support with none of my kids cause I’m a great father. So it’s not determined by how much money you’re paying at all. That’s not what it’s about. It’s about being there and being that important person in their lives.” I think every one on this list could learn a lesson or two from him.
