Let me be the first to say I hate Blackberry’s. Between my man and my friends, I have lost the battle with the PDA device.
The time that was once shared with friends or gazing into my lover’s eyes has now been replaced by vibrations that lead to thumb turning and that awkward gaze into the abyss. While I understand their feelings of wanting to be reached to land that next big client or project, more than half that nonsense is definitely spam.
Often I have to give that “put that sh*t away” look because nothing is worse than being out at an event or restaurant to catch up and being completely ignored. It’s like they have no people skills. Stop trying to look so damn important!
It’s not that I don’t want my man and my friends to succeed. I understand the significance of being accessible, but come on! When looking back on life it is the time that we shared with our loved ones that really matters (Yes, I did have to take it there).
Competing with plastic is not fun. Perhaps to remedy this situation I should follow the old adage, “if you can’t beat them, join them.” I know people. I have contacts. I just prefer a call or wait until I get home to respond. Somehow, this makes me wonder that maybe if I did have a Blackberry I would get more writing gigs. I might have to upgrade. Let me know what you think. —— By: Janita Obie
