The victim in a shooting involving “Whuteva” rapper Remy Ma has filed suit against Universal Music Group. Alleging the label promoted violence and failed to act after she was shot in 2007, lawyers for Makeda Barnes-Joseph say “Universal hires and encourages rap artists to act violently and engage in anti-social behavior in order to sell CDs. Thus, part of the performer’s persona promoted by the company is to ‘keep it real’ and remain ‘gangsta.” Remy Ma is currently serving time on charges related to the shooting, which occurred July 14, 2007, with the rapper shooting Barnes-Joseph twice in the abdomen.
