Eric Benet is back with his hit single “You’re the only one” and it’s an instant classic for the ages of R&B music fans. This song is the epitome of speaking from the heart. But that’s not the best part it’s the underlying message. This song represents an apology to you know who. An apology is nothing more than an expression of regret for a fault. As he starts the first verse, the first line grabs you, and takes you back in time. That first line opens up like the first scene in a movie. Eric’s voice leads you like a narrator. There’s a caption in the beginning of the video that reads “The place to start is at the beginning” and that’s actually where the song takes you, to the beginning of a relationship gone badly. The song is almost written as if it was intended to be a love letter.
I'm going back to the day we parted
And all the ways you were broken hearted
Take a trip everyday in my mind
I see your face I recall it few word
Its playing back like a broken record
I remember every tear in your eye
(if I do what I know)
I’d walk back in time
(I will write every wrong)
Oohh.. I would change every line
(and you’ll be here right now)
Just like yesterday
(But you'd feel no more doubts)
When you hear me say
Chorus:
You’re the only one I want (you’re the only one ..yeah)
You’re the only one I need in my life (in my life, baby)
You’re the only one I love (I love, love, love)
You’re the only one I need in my life
I see the world through a haze of mem’ries
And then the girls don’t mean a damn thing to me
It’s kinda sad how they just don’t compare
(Time will tell, let’s wait and see)
(if our love we had was meant to be)
Coz I know we got a future out there
(coz you’re still my girl)
I don’t care what they say
(let’s go back to our world)
Baby don’t you throw this love away
(coz I still believe)
In the magic of us
(this is the matter of time)
And it’s a matter of trial
Repeat chorus
Now girl it took sometime to get real with myself
Now love ain't easy sometimes
But if you find it we’ll stay together
Repeat chorus til fade
In the ninth line verse 1 it is clear that he understands that history has already been written and he is viewing it like looking at pages in a book if he could, he would change every line and make her right as if it were like yesterday. This hopefully would make her feel no more doubt when she hears him say “You’re the only one I want you’re the only one I need in my life”. The second verse describes how he sees the world through a haze of memories. Almost as if he is looking back at his life which I think he is. And know that he has professed his undying love; he is willing to wait and let time heal. He’s asking her at this point not to throw their love away and he understands that his fate is in her hands. Last line of the last verse “this is the matter of time and it’s a matter of trial” show he is being tried and judged. But the question is how much time will it take, but because of his wrongs, he is willing to wait a life time. Because she’s the only one he need in his life.
