“Get ready for an adventure, a futuristic journey into regions unknown”, this is the response I got from a woman in the crowd before the show started, when I asked her, “What should I expect?” Boy, was she right!
To kick start the night, none other than Sean “Diddy” Combs gave his usual charismatic and energetic introduction. "I've been blessed with artists like Jodeci, Notorious B.I.G. and Mary J.
Blige in the past, but this artist right here ... you've just got to see it to believe it. I don't know if you ever felt the Holy Ghost, but that's the only feeling you're going to feel tonight," said an excited Combs as he introduced Monae.
"This is possibly the most important signing of my career," Combs continued. "I thank God for blessing me with an artist like Janelle Monae. Now, are y'all ready to go to church?"
It was made very clear that he views Janelle as the future of music, he also showed his respect to Big Boi and Andre 3000 of OUTKAST, who both have worked with Janelle. What followed was a breathtaking performance that left me in awe and for anyone who knows me, it’s not easy to leave me in a state of wonder.
Enter Janelle Monae, the Kansas City native with a sound that’s a cross between Soul and Rock, glowing amidst a cloudy setting and entranced by the sounds of her guitarist as she begins the show. She delivered a spellbinding performance with cuts like "Violet Stars Happy Hunting," "CyberHop" and the strong closer "Let It Go," while the crowd hung on to every last word she surrendered.
Once the performance was finished, “Diddy” came out with a sort of “I told you so” conclusion, he wasn’t lying because the crowd was electrified and still buzzing from the performance. Monae, who was so siked from all the uproar she received, added, "I love you. Follow us in this journey. Hopefully we can alter history together."
To add to Monae's steam, well after the show had ended, the crowd refused to disassemble and exchanged interpretations of the amazing display they had witnessed.
