Anyone who has witnessed Chris Brown’s performance over the last couple years can easily see why he is hailed as the heir to the R&B throne. His swagger is undeniable and his star power is off the charts. With the release of his sophomore album, Exclusive, he proves why he is the future of modern R&B.

Exclusive is one of the most enjoyable albums of the year. Brown sticks to his strength, which is making music that makes girls scream and guys dance. The first single off the album, “Wall to Wall,” is a bounce track with some knocking production. But it pales in comparison to the energy and infectious vocals of the second single featuring T-Pain, “Kiss Kiss.” Pain’s addictive hook and Brown’s energy work to create a fun dance track for all ages. “Picture Perfect” featuring Will.I.Am. and “Down” Featuring Kanye West are also excellent collaborations that proves Chris’ ability to hold his own on almost any track.

Chris Brown’s only weakness is the slow jams. He’s still in the transition phase from teen heart throb to bonafide sex symbol so there’s going to be a few hits and misses before he finds his lane. One of the hits is “Take You Down.” The ladies will definitely appreciate this track where young Chris emphasizes his maturity saying “It’s not my first time but we can pretend it is.” I can almost hear the 10th graders screaming when he performs this live. One of the misses is “Damage,” which comes off almost like a teenage version of Confessions. It’s not a bad song but the lack of emotion in the vocals and the overproduction of the track fails to draw in the listener. And songs like that should make you feel something for the young man trying to win back his girl.

Exclusive finds Chris Brown at a crossroads; he’s trying to hang onto his teenage fans while simultaneously trying to be acknowledged as an adult. Those of us who have made it past our 18th birthday can relate to the internal struggle of this young superstar. The album is a good album. It is definitely enjoyable to listen to, both as entertainment for now, and as a promise of things to come.
