Eric Benet Ignores Mainstream Pressure, Stays 'True To R&B'

R&B singer/songwriter Eric Benet says he felt comfortable releasing his latest effort "Love & Life" despite feeling pressure from today's pop-tinged R&B hits.

"There will always be an audience for good music" says the singer who has enjoyed success with the lead single from "Love & Life" entitled "You're The Only One."

Released earlier this year, "You're The Only One" has remained strong on the R&B and AC charts through the fall.

In a recent interview with Singersroom, Benet says the hit single would not have been possible without a friendly conversation about classic R&B/Soul music.

"That song started with a conversation," says Benet who was in a studio one night talking about classic records from Blue Magic and the Stylistics, artists that were channeled for "Love & Life."

"Music back then seemed to be so well-crafted and that conversation turned into a jam session and the jam session [was] "You're The Only One."

Currently on tour promoting the effort, Benet has received praise for his willingness to create soulful music instead of trying to appease the general audience with current trends.

Talking about the album which includes a collaboration with Terry Dexter, Benet says fans enjoy "Love & Life" because "It feels good. It's healing, uplifting, feel-good music."

While his 16-year-old daughter India, who is also featured on "Love & Life," is his little lady, Benet admits his time with a special woman would begin with laughter.

"I think what really opens the night up and makes it romantic and fun is making her laugh. Let's make each other laugh and have some fun."

Thank you Eric Benet for staying true. I love your music and R&B for life. Pop & R&B are two different categories and should not be combined. Keep doing what you do...I love your music.
