The soulful and sensual ‘Backseat’ is the lead single from Washington D.C. native and recent Dreamville/Interscope signee, Ari Lennox’s debut EP, PHO, released on October 21, 2016. On the song, featuring labelmate, Cozz, and produced mostly by DJ Grumble, Ari steps out of her safe zone for a tenderoni, intimate gem, all while maintaining her unique identity as a performer.
“While the music is soulful,” states Lennox, “I’m also talking about something suggestive and unusual for a female.”
“Sometimes women are put in this box where we’re only supposed to talk about certain things,” the 25-year-old singer-songwriter explains. “I want to be braver and riskier. I think people want to hear that kind of honesty and frankness.”
Regarding her new project, Ari says it sounds like, “Modern, relaxed, turned up soul… It’s just chill with trappy vibes reminiscent of the beautiful music from the ’70s.”
The opus also draws inspiration from some of the greatest female vocalists of all time: Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Minnie Riperton and Whitney Houston.
We’ve been supporting Ari for years, so it’s good to see her career rise.
