Last week, it was confirmed by Entertainment Tonight that Christina Aguliera would perform with a hologram of Whitney Houston on the Season 10 finale of “The Voice,” but the performance has been scrapped.
Yesterday (May 19), leaked footage surfaced online of Aguilera rehearsing with the hologram. The video showed Aguilera singing a medley of Houston’s hits before introducing Houston herself, and a younger image of the late vocalist appeared. The clip has since been made unavailable, but a screen shot remains (below).
Houston’s estate axed performance after the leak of the clip, citing lack of “perfection” as the reason. They thought the technology hasn’t been perfected enough.
“We are so appreciative of the opportunity for the Whitney Houston hologram to appear on NBC’s The Voice with a talent pairing as extraordinary as Christina Aguilera and Whitney Houston,” said Pat Houston in a statement to Entertainment Tonight. “We were looking to deliver a ground breaking duet performance for the fans of both artists. However… Holograms are new technology that take time to perfect, and we believe with artists of this iconic caliber, it must be perfect. Whitney’s legacy and her devoted fans deserve perfection. After closely viewing the performance, we decided the hologram was not ready to air. We have much respect and appreciation for Christina, and she was absolutely flawless.”
No word on if they scrapped the whole performance of just the presence of the hologram. Tune in to the Season 10 finale of “The Voice” on Tuesday, May 24th at 8 pm on NBC to find out.
