Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Andra Day made a splash with her single “Rise Up, so much so, that her image will appear on 40 million Coca-Cola cups at select McDonald’s restaurants throughout the country as a part of the “Share a Cup and a Song” lyrics program.
She talks about it all in the June 2016 issue of ESSENCE Magazine, on which she graces the cover in old-school Hollywood glam.
“I really hope this gives people a simple reminder to persevere. That’s what [“Rise Up”] is all about. That’s why I like this Coke campaign, because it makes you inspire community. I hope people are able to see the encouraging stories through this.
Beginning on May 2nd, you’ll be able to purchase the cups and view an inspiring documentary called “I Rise” about four African-American women and the impact they’re making in their communities.
About her signature, vintage style, Day says she’s inspired by fashion from everywhere, in every decade. “I like to say I was established in the cities, dragged through the decades and picked up a couple of things [from every era],” she says.
Along with slaying the June 2015 cover, Andra will perform on the main stage at the ESSENCE Music Festival on Fourth of July weekend in New Orleans. Get your tickets here.
