Earlier this year, indie director Bobby Huntley created a faux film trailer for a New Edition movie he wanted to make in hopes of creating buzz and interest. Well, it looks like the effort indeed peaked some interest because the word got around and BET has picked up the rights to a three-night mini-series about the beloved R&B boy group.
According to Variety, a director has yet to be selected so Huntley may make a proposal to do the job. However, the five group members: Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant, will co-produce the project along with their longtime manager Brooke Payne (Bobby Brown isn’t mentioned as being a part of the project).
Variety states that Jesse Collins Entertainment will executive produce the mini-series. Abdul Williams (Lottery Ticket) will pen the script.
A statement by the group members reveals they are eager to tell their story. “From our beginning in the Orchard Park Projects in Boston to Hollywood and everything in between, just like The Temptations and the Jackson 5, we are ready to retrace our footsteps and show everyone how we got here.”
The biopic is slated to premiere in 2016.
Sounds like a winner! So, who'll be watching?
