We often see artists in amazing outfits: on stage, on the red carpet, on television, and so on. They are shining from head to toe, but who is responsible for this magic? How does it all come together? A stylist like King Troi, who has worked with Fantasia, Jazmine Sullivan and Leigh Bush, knows how to take your style to another level. It is in his blood, and he is ready to take the world of style by storm. We had the pleasure of talking to the King about everything from reinventing artists' style to style tips for the average Joe. Check it out!
The gift … I realized I had a gift when I was working retail, and people would actually trust me with putting an outfit together for them. To know that I made someone feel good about themselves was when I knew I was on to something.
The makings of a GREAT stylist … Confidence is a strong attribute in becoming a great stylist; if you are confident your client will never question your judgment.
Rap AKA … This caught me off guard. LMAO!!! I'll say KING Troi that's what they call me anyway lollllll.
I style … Leigh Bush, Fantasia Barrino, Jazmine Sullivan, Keke Wyatt, Joshua Rogers just to name a few……assisted with Monica, SWV and several others.
Ms. Jazmine … Jazmine was the first artist I worked with as a stylist. I would love the opportunity to work for her again. Jazmine Sullivan is a musical genius and a vocal beast; one of my favorites. It would be an honor!!!!
Fantasia showed me the way … Man ANYONE who knows me knows working with Fantasia was a goal and a dream come true. I met her in 2008 and Fantasia was actually the one who gave me the idea of becoming a stylist. I learned a lot about music and the music business from Fantasia. She believed in my vision and is like fam. I got mad love for her.
Your R&B favs … I like listening and studying the greats like Nat King Cole, Donny Hathaway, my all-time favorite Luther Vandross, Maxwell, John Legend, Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, Faith Evans, Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse. R&B is good for the soul.
Inspiration … Everything from music, art and movies inspire my style. Everyday people are my style. I get bored easily with my look. So I'm pretty daring with my style. I always dare to be different.
Humble beginnings … I started off in retail and eventually got the opportunity of a lifetime to assist a fashion stylist.
Fashion vs. Style … Fashion is trendy and a temporary way of dressing. Style is how you're identified forever through the way you dress. I hope that makes sense lmaoooo.
Words of Wisdom … Be persistent, and you must believe in yourself. This Industry has a hard time accepting and supporting the new kid on the block. Stay in your own lane…..LOYALTY is RARE!!!!!
Making of Leigh Bush … Leigh Bush allows me to be creative and display my take on the dapper gentleman. The look works because he is very consistent. He gets the vision.
Go to brands … Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole.
Styling yourself … You can't go wrong with Zara, H&M and TopShop.
Style Tips …
1. Step Outside the Box
2. Try Something New
3. Be Daring
4. Have Confidence
5. Make sure you’re comfortable
OWN IT…..OWN IT (in my Mack Wilds voice) lol
I Am Who I Am … I'm inspired on a daily basis. I try new things a lot; I'm a chameleon, a risk taker……I like to consider my style Authentic and Unique.
