Legendary recording artist Sir Elton John will be the first to receive a BRIT Icon Award, a newly created award and event put on by BRIT Award organizers.
According to The Officials Charts Company, the event is an extension of the annual BRIT Awards and will be presented to iconic recording artists at its own ceremony. The inaugural event will be held in central London on Monday September 2, and will be broadcast on ITV later that month.
“The BRIT Awards has recognised many exceptional artists whose music has connected with millions of fans,” explains BPI and BRIT Awards Chief Executive, Geoff Taylor. “A few of these artists, such as Sir Elton John, have achieved such a level of artistic creativity and originality, critical acclaim, global recognition and popular success that they deserve to be recognised as true Icons of our cultural life. With our broadcast partners ITV, our aim is to provide the ultimate tribute to these musical superheroes, which not only recognises their unique achievements but which is also spectacular entertainment.”
Sir Elton will perform songs from some of his discography as well as new material from his forthcoming album, "The Diving Board".
