Amy Winehouse's father, Mitch, is not enthused about Beyonce covering his daughter's song, "Back To Black," for "The Great Gatsby" soundtrack.
Speaking with The Daily Mail recently, Winehouse said Beyonce brings nothing to his late daughter's song, but he appreciates the payout.
"I don’t think she brings anything to it," Winehouse shared over the weekend.
Adding that he was never asked for permission, Winehouse says "they have got to pay" for the song and for that, he is grateful.
"I wasn’t asked for my permission if they could record it. They have got to pay for the privilege, which is what they are doing. I can’t tell you how much it is but it’s a lot of money," said Winehouse.
It's unclear what made him really upset about the song and how it was delivered, but he did go to Twitter to say that Beyonce should give a donation to his daughter's foundation.
"I don't know this but what if Beyonce gave £100,000 to foundation. Do you know how many kids that would help? Just putting it out there," said Mitch Winehouse.
Thoughts?
Mitch Winehouse, father to the late Amy Winehouse, recently made a shocking statement about Beyonce’s cover of his daughter’s hit song ‘Back To Black.’ His comments have caused quite an uproar in the music industry and fans are eager to know what he has to say.
The 2006 release of “Back To Black” by Amy Winehouse was an instant classic that brought her international fame and success. In 2018, Beyonce released a cover version of the same track on The Great Gatsby soundtrack which earned her both praise and criticism from around the world. Now, Mitch Winehouse is weighing in on the controversy with some bold words.
In an interview with BBC Radio 2 last week, Mitch had some strong opinions regarding how his daughter’s work was used without permission or consultation. Fans around the globe are eager to find out exactly what he said and if there will be any resolution between him and Beyonce over this issue.
Mitch Winehouse’s Response To Beyonce
Mitch Winehouse, the father of late singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, has expressed his disapproval with Beyonce’s cover of “Back to Black.” He believes that her version of the song does not do justice to his daughter’s original work and lacks sincerity in its performance.
In an interview on BBC Radio 5 Live, Mitch said, “I thought it was bizarre… I didn’t think it was appropriate…it felt like she had just taken the first take into a recording studio and then released it.” He went on to call out what he saw as a lack of emotion in Beyonce’s singing: “She didn’t attach herself to the song at all. It lacked any depth or feeling,” he said.
The criticism from Mitch is especially poignant given how important this particular track is for him personally — it was written shortly after Amy passed away in 2011. Its lyrics are reflective of both her life and death; considering this context, it’s understandable why Mitch would feel strongly about such a beloved tribute being delivered without proper respect.
Criticism Of Beyonce’s Version Of “Back To Black”
Mitch’s criticism of Beyonce’s version of “Back to Black” has been echoed by many fans. Many feel that the cover does a disservice to Amy Winehouse and her legacy, with some even going so far as to call it ‘tasteless’. It is argued that no one could do justice to such an iconic track in the same way that its original creator did; any attempt at covering it would inevitably fall short.
Some have suggested that there was also something disrespectful about Beyoncé performing this song without having known or worked with Amy personally. The singer had previously stated in interviews how much she respected Amy for her artistry, but a studio-recorded tribute falls flat against what could have been achieved had they collaborated together on the project while she was still alive.
In light of these critiques, Mitch Winehouse’s comments can be seen as more than just his personal opinion — he speaks for many who felt betrayed by Beyoncé’s rendition of such a beloved classic. While not every artist may be able to replicate another person’s work accurately, creating an homage demands respect and understanding between two artists – something which seemed lacking here.
Conclusion
I. Mitch Winehouse’s response to Beyonce was clear – he felt that the pop star had not done justice to his daughter’s song ‘Back To Black’. He believed that her version lacked authenticity and did not capture Amy’s creative spirit.
II. While some may agree with Mr. Winehouse, others may feel that Beyonce was paying homage to an iconic artist in her own way. Regardless of where one stands on this issue, it is undeniable that both versions of the song have become popular amongst fans worldwide.
III. As a father grieving for his daughter, who tragically passed away at such a young age, I can understand why Mitch would be protective over her legacy and music. It takes great courage to stand up against someone as powerful as Beyoncé, but no matter what happens next, let us remember the beautiful soul behind the original ‘Back To Black’ – Amy Winehouse.
