Applaud the New Barbie – Nicki Minaj

Since Onika Maraj, better known as Nicki Minaj, got discovered by Lil Wayne, signed a deal with Young Money and quickly rose to fame, we’ve kept a close eye on the real-life “Barbie.” Here are five reasons why we love her:

1. She Fits in the Boys’ Club…
She’s one of two female members of Young Money. Critics still consider her verse on Kanye West’s “Monster” (which also featured Jay Z and Rick Ross) to be the best. She just recently won a MTV award for “Best Hip Hop Video” beating out her male counterparts, Kanye West, Chris Brown, Lupe Fiasco and even her own boss, Lil Wayne. Nicki Minaj continuously proves to hold her own among the men.

2. But She Doesn’t Try to Fit In
Nicki Minaj is known for her over-the-top outfits, elaborate wigs and crazy alter egos she plays in her videos and when she’s performing on stage. Nicki wears what she wants, says what she thinks and does what she feels. So regardless of whether she’s Roman, Martha or Nicki, she plays by her own rules.

3. She’s Got Sex Appeal…
Almost every man would consider Nicki sexy, but when an artist’s body is most easily compared to Jessica Rabbit’s, it makes sense. And what makes her sex symbol status even sexier? She earns it without really trying.

4. She’s Talented
From the moment we first heard Nicki spit a verse, we were hooked. Once we heard an entire song and then album from Ms. Minaj, we knew she’d be around to stay for awhile.

5. She Demands Respect… and Gets It
Since women can be easily taken advantage of or disrespected especially in the hip hop world, it’s always empowering when a woman demands respect. And that’s exactly what Nicki does. In her MTV documentary “My Time Now,” she frankly said “Is it wrong for me wanting more for myself? Wanting people to treat me with respect?… When I’m assertive, I’m a bitch. When a man is assertive, he’s a boss.” Nicki, we think you’ve earned that respect now, so go ahead and be as assertive as you’d like. We’re behind you.
