Black Music Innovators: Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson is a legendary performer, singer and actress. She has over 28 years of experience in the business, with countless record hits, ground-breaking choreography, amusing videos, and starring movie and TV series roles. Janet is without a doubt an icon. She has established a place that no other artist can fill, but can only follow.

Janet was born with the expectation to be a star. Having lived in the public eye most of her life, many can say they grew up admiring her. In a 2009 interview Ciara comments, “My dream is to collaborate with Janet Jackson. She was my big idol growing up. JJ is amazing and no matter what, you can’t forget what she has contributed to American music. Janet is truly an icon. She was the only person I listened to as a kid, along with her big brother Michael.” Like Janet, Ciara and others artists like Mya and Amerie, they appeal to their fans with their sensual and erotic moves and catchy lyrics.

Others motivated by her work like Teairra Mari and Keri Hilson, have the same sex appeal required to make it in the business along with the talent to capture their audience with spectacular performances. Keri Hilson’s debut album “In a Perfect World”, welcomes her to popular culture, which was redefined and shaped by Janet, demanding seductiveness, captivating lyrics, and uptempo dance beats. Teairra is still in the early stages of her career, but we can already see Janet’s influences in her first single “Make her Feel Good”, released only at the age of 17. She is definitely off to a right start, with her assertive and uncensored lyrics about woman’s sexuality.

She has inspired women across the globe of all ages. There are so many memorable moments in her career, like the unforgettable song “Rhythm Nation”, the exotic dance moves in the video “If”, and the lyrics of “That’s the Way Love Goes”. As well as the acting role she played with Tupac Shakur in “Poetic Justice” and her latest role as Patricia in Tyler Perry’s “Why did I get married?” She is incredibly talented as a singer, actress, and dancer. She will forever be part of pop culture’s history and influence to more to come.
