In a ninety percent increase over last week’s sales record set by Michael Jackson, the King of Pop moved an estimated 800,000 albums before Tuesday’s memorial. According to Billboard, the King of Pop’s chart-topping climb includes nearly 656,000 copies of physical album sales and a reported 144,000 digital download copies. When Nielsen Soundscan’s final tally is released Wednesday, Michael Jackson’s “Number Ones” collection is expected to earn the top spot. It, alone, sold a reported 339,000 copies. As previously reported, Jackson scored a record eight albums out of the top 10 on the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart shortly after his death June 25. Radio airplay related charts are expected to be released later this week.
